Garelochhead

The Three Lochs Hostel is situated in the centre of the attractive village of Garelochhead which sits on the shores of The Gare Loch. The Hostel is situated in Centre 81, Garelochheads Youth and Community Centre and as such all the centre facilities are available to visitors. Details of our activities can be found on the Centre 81 page. The village has a range of amenities such as a Post Office, Medical Centre, Church and several small shops. There is also a range of places to eat including The Perch for daytime light meals and snacks, The Anchor Inn for bar meals and for takeaways, The Golden Valley Chinese take away and Ali's fish, chip and curry bar for Fish suppers, Kebabs and Pizzas. There are lovely walks around the lochs where you can enjoy an evening stroll watching the large variety of birds which live on the shore. The village also has several community halls where village events take place so look out for posters telling you what is happening during your stay.

Rhu (Conservation) Village

Rhu village is situated two miles out of Helensburgh, on the Gareloch, on the route to Garelochhead,the Rosneath Peninsula and on to Loch Long, Arrochar, Oban, Fort William and the Highlands of Scotland, a good stopping-off point on your journey. It's a very pretty village with a strong sailing tradition and even tales of smuggling in days of yore! Glenarn Gardens, which, although a private residence, are open to the public [a small donation is encouraged] and are spectacular in the spring.

Loch Lomond

Loch Lomond is renowned throughout the world for its beauty. The picturesque village of Luss rests on its shores just a short drive across the hills along the A817 voted one of the loveliest routes in the country. Balloch, at the Southern end of the Loch houses the Visitor Centre for the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park and is also home to a Sea Life Centre, water sports and a shore side shopping centre which hosts regular farmers markets. The West Highland Way passes along the eastern shore of Loch Lomond. An official long distance walk, the West Highland Way is very popular as it runs through stunning scenery: it stretches from Milngavie, near Glasgow, to Fort William, and covers a distance of 96miles (154km).

Helensburgh

Just a 15 minute bus journey from Garelochhead takes you to the Victorian town of Helensburgh, birth place of John Logie Baird. Situated on the banks of the Clyde Helensburgh provides a wide variety of both independent shops and familiar highstreet chains. It has a large selection of Cafes and Restaurants with something to suite everyone. In spring the town becomes lost under the Cherry blossom trees which line several of the main roads through the town. A sight not to be missed if you are here in late spring. Also not to be missed is Hill House a beautiful example of a Charles Rennie MacIntosh building which is run by the National Trust for Scotland (entrance free to members)

Glasgow

A world famous cosmopolitan city, Glasgow has everything and can easily be reached by train from Helensburgh (every 30 mins)or from Garelochhead (2 trains per day) A vibrant city Glasgow has a multitude of Museums and Galleries (many of which are free) world class shopping centres and beautiful public spaces. In the evening it comes alive with Bars, Music venues, Night clubs and Theatres. If you have never been it's worth the trip.

Project 81 is an umbrella organisation comprising Garelochhead's Community Centre - Centre 81, our Community Gym - Active 81, an award winning Youth Group - Route 81 and a delightful hostel providing accomodation for individuals and groups on the shores of The Gareloch.
